What do you think of the proposed changes to Georgia graduation requirements?

While we have been toiling in our classroom this summer, there has been a great deal of buzz about the proposed changes our state leaders have put on the table to toughen up graduation requirements for Georgia high school students.  Read about these proposed changes here in this article from the AJC. 

What do you think about these proposed changes?  Do you agree or disagree with the proposed changes?  WHY?  Provide specific reasons to support your opinion in a well-developed and thoughtful paragraph of 8-10 sentences.

iPods: They aren’t just for music anymore!

Take a few mintues to read this article from the New York Times about the iPod as a test prep tool for the SAT.  What do you think about this new way of preparing for the SAT?  Would you buy these interactive programs designed for the iPod to prepare for the SAT?  Do you think this new method of test prep might encourage more students today to do more preparation for the SAT?  Why or why not?

What do you think about Kaplan’s strategy of creating a “My Space” page to introduce vocabulary building manga and graphic novels to help students prepare for the SAT?  Do you think this is a good idea?  Do you think more students will take advantage of this approach to test prep?  Why or why  not?

Do gender separate classrooms lead to improved academic success?

Take a look at this interesting article from the Idaho Press Tribune.  After reading it, share what you think.  Do you think that students would do better in gender separate classrooms?  Should we try a year in which girls and boys are taught in separate classes?  Based on the article and your own experience, share your opinon:  would gender separate classrooms help students to improve academically?  Why or why not?

June 19: The Cost of Quitting High School

Take a few minutes to quietly listen to this news report from CNN about the cost over your lifetime of quitting high school.  Because the pop-up blocker sometimes blocks the video player, be sure to click the button that says, “Launch the CNN Video Player” to view the news story that is a video clip slightly over 3 minutes in length.

Does TV destroy interest in literature?
